Make a Mountain Dulcimer (Part 3 of 3)

  • Discover Burien Makerspace 611 SW 152nd Street (lower) Burien, WA, 98166 United States (map)

The mountain dulcimer is a three string instrument from Appalachia commonly played in blue grass and folk music. They are a great start for a budding luthier since the “neck” is on top of the sound chamber making them mechanically much easier to build than a guitar or ukulele. They also traditionally have diatonic fret board cutting down on the time needed to set the frets.

Go from wood and wire to a finished instrument in this three-part class. We will mill stock to size, book match boards, CNC machine head stocks, set frets, bend sides and more. By the end of it you will have a custom instrument built form the ground up.

CLASS PARTS:

  • In part one we will glue up our panels, machine our headstock, tail piece, and fretboard as well as design our sound holes.

  • In part two we will bend the sides add the frets to the fretboard, tuners to the head stock, cut out the top and bottom panel and glue up the sound chamber.

  • In part three with will glue down the fret board, trim the top and bottom panels, sand and finish the instruments.

You will also have access to the space over the week to work on any steps you may need extra time on.

Ages 16 and up. Limited to three students.

$150 registration fee - includes all necessary materials for all 3 class parts
